TEXT REFINEMENT
Copyediting and Proofreading
Once the story holds, we make the text clean, consistent, and ready for publication.
Copyediting makes a “well-written” text readable and trustworthy—typos, punctuation, awkward phrasing, name/date inconsistencies, repeated tics. Readers leave the story when they notice them.
Proofreading is the last safety net before publisher or print: the comma everyone missed, the wrong character name, the line break that slipped through.
At 451 Atölye we offer copyediting and proofreading modularly—after structural work, or for manuscripts that already hold. In our dual-editor model the technical editor leads this layer; a second check round is added when needed.
What does copyediting include?
The copyeditor works on surface and rhythm:
- Spelling and orthography (Turkish standard)
- Punctuation and sentence-length balance
- Awkward constructions and unclear references
- Character/place names and timeline consistency
- Redundant phrasing and weak word choices
- Register suited to genre and target reader
Copyediting does not rebuild plot; if structure is shaky, we address that first.
When is proofreading needed?
Proofreading comes when the text is copyedited, you have made your last author pass, and you say "hands off." The goal is not new ideas but catching final defects. We can work from PDF for digital editions or post-layout files for print.
The difference between copyediting and proofreading
Copyediting includes active correction and suggestions—the text changes. Proofreading is minimal intervention—mostly markup and a short fix list. The same person should not do both back-to-back; we use separate eyes when possible.
Who is it for?
- Authors done with structural work who need language polish
- Projects needing publisher-requested language revision
- Self-publishers seeking a professional finish
- Magazine/anthology pieces aiming for a flawless short text
Frequently asked questions
How many rounds of copyediting?
It depends on length—usually one main round, your check, and a short second round if needed.
Do you accept formats other than Word?
Yes—Google Docs, Scrivener exports, or PDF (proofreading); we confirm in the intro call.
Can I order proofreading only?
Yes—if the text was already professionally copyedited, proofreading-only is available.
